Welcome to Fulford

Fulford is a village, on the southern outskirts of the City of York, along the eastern banks of the River Ouse and is within the Fulford and Heslington Ward of City of York Council.

Fulford is home to St Oswald’s Primary SchoolFulford Secondary School, it has thriving Community Sports Clubs (including Fulford Tennis ClubFulford Football Club, a Community Orchard Community Orchard  the village hosts the popular annual Fulford Show at the School Lane playing field.

The parish of Fulford retains a strong community and village identity whilst being close in proximity to the City Centre of York and this is particularly evident along the main York – Selby Road which passes through the historical centre of the village.  Fulford’s Conservation Area includes the whole of historic village core, the western part of Heslington Lane, most of the parkland of Connaught Court (including the Sir John Hunt Homes) together with the Fulford Park housing development. To the south, the washland areas around the A19 approach road together with Stone Bridge are also included.

Fulford Ings, the open land along the river Ouse is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is managed by Natural England. The area, which includes Fulford Village Green, is protected owing to the rare flora and fauna associated with this valuable riverside habitat, something that is especially important as this is the habitat of the rare tansy beetle.

Fulford has a rich history including being well known as the site of the Battle of Fulford where, in 1066 Earl Tostig and Harold Hardrada defeated the English before going on to be defeated by King Harold at Stamford Bridge before King Harold’s subsequent defeat by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. Fulford Parish Council covers an area from Crockey Hill in the south to St Oswald’s Road in the north. The parish is home to over 3000 residents in a diverse range of properties including large period houses, cottages, pioneering sustainable properties, contemporary flats, bungalows and traditional family homes. Fulford retains its village character with many areas and buildings of interest. The A19, a major trunk road, runs through the middle of the parish from south to north. The Parish Council is responsible for Fulford Cemetery on Fordlands Road, Fulford AllotmentsFulford Social Hall, Fordlands Road playing field and School Lane playing field.

Over the centuries many individuals, religious and civic bodies held rights of ownership or right to use the commons, fields and buildings of what were then the two Fulfords (Water Fulford and Gate Fulford) but the civil parish in its current form was named Water Fulford in 1895, renamed Fulford in 1935 and in 1996, it was transferred from Selby Rural District of North Yorkshire to become part of the York Unitary Authority.
